Biography

Kate’s executive career did not start in the usual fashion. Qualifying as a registered nurse, Kate spent 8 years working in very challenging environments including becoming a specialist in HIV/AIDS nursing in the 1980’s when the disease was new and not well understood in the community. While nursing, Kate completed a Bachelor of Health Science specialising in Immunology and graduated as Dux of the course.

In 1993, Kate completed a law degree and became a partner a Corrs Chambers Westgarth, a major national law firm in 2003. Specialising in Construction and Engineering law, Kate has negotiated complex contractual arrangements for significant national and international projects. As a private practice lawyer, Kate had high quality client relationships and worked with a wide range of private and public companies as well as government.

Having strong leadership and problem solving skills led to Kate being promoted to leadership roles including in the Sydney Construction practice at Baker & McKenzie. At Baker & McKenzie, Kate was also one of three Recruitment Partners, responsible for all graduate recruitment at the firm.

In 2006, Kate moved into a corporate role as General Counsel & Company Secretary of Transfield Services Limited – a public listed company with $3.5bn in revenue and 24,000 employees in 8 countries. While at Transfield Services, Kate became a leader in creating and driving improvements in corporate support services. These have included the implementation of an enterprise risk management program; designing and implementing an effective Code of Business Conduct and compliance program; improving and implementing a robust tender review governance process; creating an effective internal audit function; leading the centralising of the procurement, property and asset management functions and redesigning the business processes to improve the effectiveness of those functions.

In March 2014, Kate was appointed to the role of Chief Executive for the Logistics, Construction and Consulting Service lines at Transfield (now Broadspectrum). She was responsible for the operational delivery of services to Transfield Services’ clients in these industries which has revenues over $2bn and circa 9,000 employees. As one of Transfield’s Service service line leaders, Kate is responsible for maintaining and improving the health and safety performance, ensuring there is profitable contract delivery, securing leveraged work and enhancing workforce engagement and productivity.

As a senior executive, Kate participates in mentoring programs and has established a team which effectively operates with flexible work practices. Kate is an active member of the “Glass Elevator” initiative, through which she provides career guidance to women from other companies. Kate is a regular careers adviser for girls at high school level and presents at legal industry sessions on achieving work/life balance.

In 2014, Kate won a prestigious scholarship to attend the Women’s Leadership Forum at Harvard Business School.

With 3 adult stepchildren and a 19 year old daughter, Kate strives to be a role model for women who choose to combine career progression with family.
